Taking A Vision to Create Sparkling Consciously Sustainable Jewellery

Stepping into the world of fine jewellery, Jessica Cazdow-Collins is a name that sparkles with nearly four decades of expertise. With a career that began at the tender age of 18 on London’s prestigious Bond Street, Jessica has seen the jewellery industry from every angle, from glamorous West End days to gemmology classes at the Sir John Cass Institute by night. From being thrown in at the deep end, Jessica worked by day in the West End and learned about gems at night in the East End. She has loved jewellery from the very start. Her ambition to create her own brand simmered for years, fuelled by friends and clients who longed for her signature designs to be more widely available.

The Spark Behind Juraster

After thirty years in the heart of London’s jewellery scene, Jessica was ready for a change. She wanted to create jewellery that wasn’t just another echo in an endless parade of repetitive designs. Feeling line there are so many brands out there just copying each other, and it’s all so repetitive. For Jessica, it was all about positive impact, ensuring value at every stage, from the source to the wearer. Jessica wanted her jewellery to really mean something, to give value at both ends of the chain. That became her mission.

This drive led her to fairmined gold and silver.  Fairmined Gold and Silver is a certification that guarantees precious metals are sourced from empowered artisanal and small-scale mining communities that meet rigorous social, environmental, and labor standards. Established by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), the certification requires miners to operate transparently, protect workers’ rights, use environmentally responsible practices (including reduced mercury and cyanide use), and reinvest a portion of proceeds, the Fairmined Premium, directly back into their communities. For buyers, choosing Fairmined means the metal in their jewellery or products can be traced back to its source and supports fairer, more sustainable mining practices rather than the often exploitative and environmentally damaging conditions associated with conventional small-scale mining.

This was a choice that proved far more challenging than expected. Jessica hadn’t realised quite how hard it would be to do things differently. It took three years to find the right manufacturers for fairmined material, which was a real baptism of fire! But her determination never wavered.

The name ‘Juraster’ was born on the wild west coast of Scotland, during an unexpected stop at the Isle of Jura while sailing. The legendary Paps of Jura, Jessica felt a connection to the island’s magical, eternal beauty. “‘Jura’ for the island, and ‘Astra’ from the Greek for ‘stars’. That magical place captured everything she wanted her jewellery to be.

The Artist Behind the Brand

There wasn’t a ready-made course; it was so personal and responsive to what I needed at the time. Toyin was always patient and encouraging, and she’s done this so many times before.

The Challenges: Building a Brand from Scratch

Launching a brand from zero is no small feat, even for someone with Jessica’s pedigree. COVID-19 had just shaken the world, and the jewellery industry was in flux. Having started the development of her business in 2021, Jessica first heard about Onwards and Up through an online event on the impact of Brexit run by the Goldsmiths’ Centre. She’d seen that Onwards and Up offered practical business support for new brands, so she reached out, keen to create a brand rooted in sustainability.

Coming from a background in major global brands, Jessica knew all about working with marketing departments but had never built her own marketing strategy from the ground up. She’d always worked with big teams, but she’d never had to think about things like pricing structures, market research, or building a product assortment from scratch. That was all new territory for her. That’s where Onwards and Up came in, offering guidance every step of the way, from market research and product assortment to pricing and brand positioning.

The Onwards and Up Approach: Collaborative and Flexible

There was no cookie-cutter plan here. Instead, we tailored our approach to Jessica’s specific needs at each stage.

We kicked off with market research, reaching out to Jessica’s mailing list, and running focus groups to uncover what jewellery truly meant to her target audience. Time was spent with targeted groups just chatting about jewellery, hearing other people’s views. These insights shaped Juraster’s core offering: versatile, mix-and-match pieces that let wearers express their individuality. The research highlighted that people wanted to wear jewellery every day, to mix and match, to make it their own. This became one of Juraster’s pillars.

Finding the right manufacturers for fair-mined materials was a marathon, not a sprint, but regular check-ins and a steady stream of encouragement kept momentum high. “There were so many hurdles, especially with Fairmined production, but Toyin kept me going. Whenever I felt lost, her advice helped me find a way through.”

Time was spent building a website optimised for SEO and usability, ensuring Juraster’s story and values shone through every page. A business plan and pricing strategy completed the foundation, and when the first collection arrived, we launched Juraster with a soft launch to the Allbright Club, followed by a full trade debut at the London Olympia Jewellery Show.

The journey hasn’t always been smooth; the high street is a tough nut to crack. But Jessica has a dynamic business that has enabled her to pivot, focusing on building e-commerce revenue through smart campaigns and a growing digital presence. Jessica’s blog pages now get the most organic traffic, especially the ‘Crowns’ blog. It’s amazing to see over 120,000 impressions, which drives significant organic traffic to the website. Using blog content as a traffic driver was a strategy Jess had not considered previously.

With Onwards and Up’s ongoing support and a finger on the pulse of digital marketing, Juraster is growing its community and reach, one beautiful piece at a time.

“I always get brilliant advice, even when Toyin’s just chatting; she can’t help herself! She’s a total font of information.”
