Time goes so fast. It’s that magical time of year again! The South West streets of burst into colour as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.  Located in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for one week in May. There’s a certain buzz in the air,  you can’t help but get swept up in it, even if you’re not the world’s keenest gardener. Though I am not a green fingered gardener I am a sucker for a Peony or Gerber. Once again, I have had the fortune to be invited back to be part of the trade stand judging team (posh floral frocks dress code of the day!).

Having spoken to many businesses about my judging antics, many have asked what it takes to get in to the show.  Onwards and Up here to share some insightful and practical tips for anyone dreaming of exhibiting at this world-famous show.

What Makes Chelsea So Special?

If you’ve never experienced the Chelsea Flower Show.  A heady mix of the UK’s finest gardening talent, creative crafts, and art, all under one (very large) roof. Day one is reserved for press, VIPs, the judging teams and, of course, the King and Queen popping in for a quick stroll through the show gardens.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just considering dipping your toe into the trade stand world, Chelsea is not for the faint-hearted. Just like any other trade show it needs investment, time and nurturing to really see the return on your investment.

Just like any other trade shows it needs investment, time and nurturing to really see the return on your investment.

Standards are sky-high, from the show gardens themselves right down to the stands selling your everyday gardening tools, lifestyle products as well as fashion and accessories.  Where there is a will there is a way even at a flower show.  More on this later. The RHS expects everyone to bring their A-game, with pride and presentation at the very heart of it all.

A Brief Stroll Through Chelsea’s History

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) started way back in 1804, hosting early flower shows across London. Fast forward to 1913, and the Chelsea Flower Show found its forever home at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Despite a few interruptions thanks to the world wars, the event has only grown in stature, now a true symbol of British gardening excellence, drawing in crowds and green-fingered talent from around the globe.

Chelsea is famous for showcasing everything from jaw-dropping show gardens to rare plant species, and it’s always at the forefront of setting new trends in garden design.  and climate themes are big news in recent years, so be ready to show your green credentials!

What Happens At The Chelsea Flower Show?

Here’s a little taste of what you’ll find if you take the plunge and exhibit (or just visit for the day):

Show Gardens

The main attraction, and the stuff of a gardener’s dreams.  These are large, elaborate gardens designed by top names in the business. Expect themes like sustainability, wild planting, and innovative landscaping. The competition is fierce, with awards from Best in Show to Gold, Silver-Gilt, Silver, and Bronze up for grabs.

The Great Pavilion

Step into the Great Pavilion and you’ll find yourself surrounded by floral displays from the best nurseries and plant specialists in the business. Rare, exotic, and new varieties are all showcased here, and the Plant of the Year competition keeps things exciting for those always on the lookout for the next big thing in horticulture.

Trade Stands and Marketplaces

It’s not all about looking, there’s plenty to buy too! From gardening tools and outdoor furniture to seeds and handcrafted goodies, it’s a paradise for anyone with even a smidgen of interest in their garden.

Talks, Demonstrations, and Workshops

The live talks and workshops cover everything from sustainable planting to the latest in design trends run throughout the week.  Check the event schedule to find out more.

Awards and Recognition

This is where it gets serious. RHS judges (including yours truly, occasionally!) meticulously assess gardens and exhibits for creativity, plant health, and design. There’s nothing like the thrill of seeing your hard work recognised.

Not to be overlooked, the trade stands also have their own set of awards which the judging team will nominate as part of the stand assessment and award by the end of day one.  The awards up for grabs are best trade stand, which this year was James Doran-Webb, and best retail innovation was By Boon.

What Does It Take To Be Selected For Chelsea?

Chelsea’s reputation for excellence means they don’t just let anyone in. Competition for stands is high, and the waiting list is as long as your arm. Here are some tips that the RHS is looking for:

  • Relevance & Quality:

Top priority goes to products that are garden-related or horticultural, but non-horticultural goods may be considered if they fit the spirit of the show.  There are a raft of businesses beyond gardening products, including fashion, lifestyle, art, sculpture, food and drink. The key is to ensure your product, through design aesthetics and relevant values, demonstrates a connection and relevance to the show. For example, floral printed men’s shirts, scented candles using natural plant products, jewellery inspired by nature and horticulture, tea towels and jam with floral design, sustainable production.  Hopefully, you catch my drift.

  • Stand Design:

Your stand should be imaginative and visually striking, ideally with clever use of plant materials. From floor to ceiling, think about how you can maximise your stand space into an inviting secret garden of its own. Think creatively about your storage space and integrate this into your stand design.  You could be marked down for poor storage design.

  • Product Mix:

The organisers aim for a balanced range of categories to keep things interesting. The beauty of this show is that there are never too many of any business category.  The trade stand team do a great job of mixing it up and presenting an array of products to keep the visitors engaged and give businesses a fair shot at selling.

  • Track Record:

Previous RHS awards can help, but aren’t essential.

  • Business Credentials:

A permanent address, professional website and clear contact details are a must.

  • Good Behaviour:

A solid record at previous RHS shows, prompt invoice payment, and a reputation for good after-sales service all help your case.

How Much Is A Trade Stand at Chelsea Flower Show?

For 2025, the Chelsea Flower trade stand Shell Schemes (the standard trade stand structure) start at £425.22 per m² plus VAT. These timber structures come with either one or two open sides (if you’re lucky enough to bag a corner), timber walls and flooring, a canvas roof, and a RHS signboard with your business name. You’ll also get a strip light as standard.

  • All floors must be covered (carpet, decking or paving, your choice), and carpets must meet British fireproofing standards.
  • Stands may have steps depending on location, and walls can be painted or wallpapered (but must be returned to white before you leave).  You may incur a fee if you do not paint white before you leave.
  • Lights, shelving, counters, water, electrics and Wi-Fi will be an additional cost to be order through the show unless you bring your own.  Whilst lighting can be expensive, it can be the make or break to make it stand out. Poorly lit stand will impact the presentation of your stand and products.

Typical stand sizes: Shell schemes are usually 3m or 4m deep, with a minimum frontage of 3m and a panel height of 2.7m.

Essential Stand Design Rules (a.k.a. What Not to Do)

Chelsea has a few non-negotiables you need to know about:

  • Strictly Banned: Artificial grass, faux plants, olive trees, gnomes (yes, really), balloons, feather flags, exhibition trailers or vans, food and drink sales, glass chippings, and any timber not compliant with RHS policy.
  • No Plant Sales: You can display plants, but you can’t sell them at the show.
  • No Sub-letting: Your space is yours alone, but you can apply for a joint exhibit if you want to team up.
  • Storage: Any storage must be within your stand and out of sight, no boxes cluttering up the aisles.  Any clutter seen by the judging team may lead to a markdown

And just to be crystal clear, artificial grass and faux plants are a total no-go at any RHS event. If you try to sneak them in, you’ll be asked to remove them, no exceptions.  These guys do not mess around.

Wise Words From Ami Rabheru on Exhibiting At Chelsea

As an assessor I’ve seen firsthand what makes a stand ‘bloom’ so I thought I’d share my thoughts on how the best product-based businesses transform retail into immersive, multi sensory experiences that celebrate innovation and horticultural excellence at the show;

  • Blend planting seamlessly with your product. After all, at its heart it’s a horticulture show!
  • Tell stories through displays to spark excitement, curiosity and make it an immersive experience for the customer.
  • Design for flow, innovation and creativity to draw people and makes it playful, thematic, and memorable.
  • Attention to detail, like floors, storage, signage, use of materials, a well thought out design – every detail gets noticed.
  • Focus on detail, finish and feeling. Don’t cut corners, it will get noticed! Standards are HIGH.

Chelsea Flower Show Trade Stand Star Awards The Need To Know

So this is where the likes of me and the rest of the judging crew step in on day to assessor in teams 250 stands on day one of the show. As well as making your stand look beautiful

Throughout day one the trade stand judges will be assessing all the stands and grading them and stands to be presented with one of the following awards

  • 5* – Outstanding stand
  • 4* – Excellent stand
  • 3* – Very good stand
  • Good stand
  • No award

The criteria the stands are assessed against for the the award to be confirmed

Use of plant material: In this aspect, plant materials are the priority on the stand, and the product must be second. You must demonstrate imaginative planting throughout the stand using the highest quality plant materials.  Half-dead plants do not promote the right look on your stand.  Be mindful of selecting durable, robust plants and flowers that will last the week come rain or shine. This should be woven throughout the stand.  Brownie points for presenting material properly planted and arrangements, and not just a potted flower put inside a plant box.  The judges will be looking. The planting should completely alter the space and have an impact without your products on show.

Overall design: Design and presentation are key.  Assessing to what extent the stand creates a visual theatrical impact, where all parts of the stand enhance the product and brand on show.  You must demonstratean  innovative and original concept that is well-planned and executed.

Visual merchandising: The products seamlessly tie in with the theme and plant materials.  Make sure you are making it clear to the visitors what your business is about and what you do.

Presentation and storage: your stand with plants and products creates a positive and inviting environment that visitors want to spend time in.  As stated earlier, making sure that the storage is incorporated into the stand that enhances that’s stands overall design.

Signage: presenting your business information, whether it be marketing material or price tags.  These all need to be in keeping with the brand.  Sticking white labels on walls next to present the prices on will be frowned upon.  Think about how you can creatively present your point of sale, swing tags and labels.

Attention to detail and finish: fixtures and fittings should be delivered to the highest quality.  Make sure you address those snags, dodgy poles and wonky product shelves to present an eye-catching display and nothing that detracts attention.

The star rating is a great way to get feedback on how you can improve your stand for future shows (as we also provide written feedback if requested), but also provides a level of credibility.  Each stand will receive its star rating award on day 2 to have on the stand throughout the show.

For those receiving awards at the lower end of the scale, this can be seen as a way to improve the standing for next time around.  Any businesses exhibiting for 2 or more years and receiving good or no awards may not be considered for future shows.  RHS take their standards seriously and will not approve applications if there are no signs of improvement.  Remember, they have a massive waiting list of businesses wanting to get into the show.
